As British Summer time kicked in Brereton Wheelers kicked off the second counter in their season long league competition. The hilly 10 miles time trial was as much a test of character as it was speed, the wind compounding the challenge that riders faced.
Evergreen Brian Hession led the charge into the chill, the 72 year old filling the number 1 slot for his first competitive outing of the year. For his efforts he recorded an exemplary 39 minute ride.
From a solid entry of 18 riders Brereton members spaced themselves evenly throughout the imposing field. Early returner Dave Donghue came home with tales of ardour on the road from Abotts Bromley to Rugeley, his 33 minute ride taking him just outside evens.
Home soon after Paul Cocker confirmed that the leg across Blithfield Resevoir had proved a tougher prospect than envisaged, with a coarse breeze taking advantage of the exposed terrain, to hamper efforts. Paul’s 30 minute ride proved enough to hold a 20mph average.
As riders crossed the line it became apparent that one distinct name was missing, that of Brereton’s pre-race favourite, Neil Walker. Steve Moss’s timely finish resolved the mystery, advising that Walker had fallen foul of a puncture but had thankfully managed to pull up safely without undue alarm. For his effort, club IT anchorman, Moss, posted a mid-27 minute ride, very respectable in the conditions.
Despite his misfortune Walker finds himself in an early lead in both the club’s senior and veteran’s league competitions. Rewarding both consistency personal improvement the event gave opportunities for Dave Donoghue to accumulate valuable points as it did Brian Hession. Missing from the top three for a couple of years Brian re-established himself in the vets championship, hopefully a sign of things to come.
