Emerging from the harshness of the winter, local cycling club Brereton Wheelers have sustained their activities both indoors and outdoors through the cold months but astride bikes in both environments.
On the road club runs have taken members deep into the local country side, avoiding main roads wherever possible. As well as keeping the legs ticking over the club’s leisurely rides have been a useful asset in developing both stamina and aerobic capacity in readiness for their significant summer project.
At the other end of the scale a contingent of riders have been actively competing throughout the period of dark nights courtesy of weekly Watt Bike racing at Lichfield Leisure Centre.
Regular competitors Anne Robinson, husband Ian, Graham Birch and Ian Beard have tackled a range of disciplines, chalking up some impressive results along the way.
A new challenge to the membership, the computerised racing seems to suit Ian Beard. He took third place overall, won his group competition but most significantly recorded the fastest time for 500 metres for the whole series, a very impressive result. This success has galvanised him into taking a serious look at track racing for the forthcoming season, a discipline that should suit his raw talent.
With just two weeks to go before the club’s first domestic race of the year riders are winding up their climbing legs in preparation for the hilly 23 miles affair that will greet them on Sunday March 14th. Using a course that has been dormant to Brereton for a few years, competitors will follow the A51 from Weston to Bishton before heading off to Abbots Bromley and subsequently Uttoxeter, before the final gruelling leg back to Weston. The event will provide a clear indication of who has managed to train throughout the bad weather and those who have been laid low.
