Brereton wheelers members have been busy over the last few weeks. Phil Deakin has been adding to his impressive long distance riding by completing the “Reg ride” once again. This is now the second time that Phil has completed the 150 mile challenge, on both occasions he has done it solo and with no road side support. The ride takes in the two huge climbs of the Cat and Fiddle and Snake pass. As all of the Brereton wheelers members who road the charity ride last year, it is also the smaller climbs towards the end that make tired legs turn the pedals over even slower. Well done to Phil for completing both rides, rumour has it that he will be attempting to do it one more time, but the next one will be ridden from the opposite way. We all wish him well for that challenge.
New member Emily Upton has been getting back into racing by competing in the Barking and Dagenham triathlon. The race was a team event with one member completing a 400m swim first. The next was a 20km cycle ride. Emily competed in the cycle ride; it was two 10km laps. Emily said that unfortunately there were five or six sets of traffic lights on the course. Cyclists had to stop on the red light and were disqualified if they did not. Obviously this had a big affect on her time, but she really enjoyed getting back into competing after being forced to give up a promising running career due to a back injury. It was Emily’s first race on a bike and hopefully it will not be her last.
Sunday the 14th August brought about a club run of a slight difference for Brereton wheelers members with families. The group met at the café at Marquis Drive for a small leisurely ride on mountain bikes. The ride was led by Graham Birch with daughter Fay supplying the turbo power. Graham’s wife Kate also attended as did Phil Deakin and son Cameron. Joined by Angus Page and Jo Roden the group had a nice and steady ride around the Chase. After enjoying a cup of tea and snacks at Birches Valley café, they headed back to Marquis Drive and the rides end. Hopefully this will become a regular family morning out over the coming months.
It was back to time trialling on Tuesday 16th August with a “two up” test over five miles. This event requires teams of two riders to race over a course, with each member taking their turn on the front. The winning team was from Lichfield CCC, and consisted of S. Clayton snr and S. Clayton jnr in a very impressive time of 10.52 minutes. Second place went to G.Truelove and W.Hyde, also of Lichfield CCC in a time of 11.39 minutes. Steve Williams and M. Baker were third for Brereton Wheelers in 12.25 minutes. Next in was the pairing of Phil Deakin and Richard Lewis being chased strongly by Simon Harvey and Ian Beard. A time trial outing for Anne Robinson and Derek Matthews made up the final pairing. There were some strong solo rides over the course, K.Breeze of Stafford RC having the best time of 11.37 minutes. The ever present Brian Hession road a very commendable time of 15.02 minutes.
