Enjoying the luxury of diversity Brereton Wheelers were able to deploy a team to the British Masters Track championships at Newport South Wales last week whilst still planning for their extensive charity ride. Taking to the boards of Newport’s indoor velodrome the Brereton team was made up of Anne Robinson, Don O’Connor and Steve Cronshaw.
Developing each time she hits the championship trail Anne stepped up to 4th place in both the 500 metre time trial, with a new personal best of 46.799secs, and the individual pursuit. The eight laps of the 250 metre track took her just 3 minutes and 9 seconds, boosting her confidence and clearly putting her in the medal hunt.
A ride a shade over 42 seconds was good enough to place Don the top ten of the men’s 500m time trial, his lung bursting effort reminiscent of the appearances he would make for the club during the 1970’s. 7th place in the 2000m pursuit consolidated his championship outing and gave him a benchmark for the rest of his season.
No stranger to medal ceremonies Steve Cronshaw hauled his track craft into full view when he disposed of all but one of the opposition in some thrilling sprint racing. His sprint silver was matched with a silver medal in the 500m time trial, raw speed being the order of the day.
The club’s next big track appointment will be their own championships at Newcastle Under Lyme in mid August.
In the midst of all the recent activities the club has maintained its weekly diet of evening club events with the ‘retro 10’ making a repeat appearance after its inaugural outing last year. A small field, complimented by visitors from other clubs, gathered under threatening skies to make the most of their limited technology.
Neil Walker comfortably took the night’s honours with a short 26 minute ride but it was the efforts of Steve Moss and Brian Hession that captured the spirit of days gone by. Both sported fixed wheel machines, Brian’s being particularly traditional. Steve impressed with his 26-50 while Brian’s 33-09 was the first of three races that he crammed into six days.
On Thursday evening the septuagenarian ventured south of Birmingham to notch up a 20mph evening 10 mile event; pairing this with a Sunday morning 25 the day after his sponsored ride efforts. His 1 hour 21 minute ride at Evesham put an illustrious cap on a remarkable week for both himself and the club in general.
Looking ahead to the next generation, member Graham Birch has been quietly running weekly coaching sessions to develop young riders. To date the focus has been on cycle safety, riding position and braking. This development looks set to swell the club’s junior ranks with enthusiastic youngsters who simply want to enjoy cycling.
