The last few weeks of April have been all go for many members of Brereton Wheelers cycling club. Graham Birch and Ian Beard have both been honing there skills on the oval track in preparation for the start of the track league season. Ian has been making the journey north to Newcastle under Lyme’s track for coaching for what will be his first full track season. For all that know him; we wait in anticipation for his times in the sprints. Graham Birch has been putting the finishing touches to his preparation at Aldersley Stadium in Wolverhampton ready for the start of the Fred Williams track league on Wednesday 4th May evening.
On 11th April Ian and Anne Robinson travelled to the Cotswolds to take part along with 1100 other riders in the Hell of the North mountain bike event. This was a mass start event over two distances of 50km and 100km.Well done to both of them for completing that in very respectable times.
The club’s time trial season continued on Tuesday 26th April with the five mile event held on the Alrewas course. The event was won by Steve Clayton of Lichfield CCC in a time of 11 minutes and 13 seconds, two seconds ahead of the next rider W.Penn who rides for Mammoth cycles. Graham Birch was the first rider in for Brereton Wheelers with a respectable 11 minutes and 25 seconds to put him in fourth place. Steve Williams rode well to finish in under 13 minutes and Phil Deakin showed that his daily commute to Wolverhampton is doing him no harm by finishing in just over 14 minutes. Many thanks to all who took part and all the time keepers and helpers without who these events would not be possible.
On 27th April, Steve Moss took on a monumental days cycling challenge. The Castleton Classic. This is an Audax event that set out from Shenstone and wound its way through to Longnor, Tideswell and finally Castleton in the Peak district, before returning home to Shenstone. In all a total of 213 kilometres. An excellent achievement well done to him.
