Brereton Wheeler Angus Page ventured to Scotland for the Bank Holiday weekend to participate in one the sports rapidly expanding disciplines – the sportive. A mass participation event with target times the rides are predominantly stamina focussed endurance evants.
To quote Page ‘the Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge was a fantastically well organised event that took in some spectacular scenery on almost traffic free roads’.
The route stretched over 82 miles with over 6000 feet of climbing. Whilst passing through the highest village in Scotland the ride also paid homage to the humble pedal cycle crossing its birthplace by way of recognition.
Toughest climb of the day was the Tour of Britain first category Mennock pass. Mennock by name but menace by nature, with 10 miles to be scaled at an incline of 7%, into a vicious headwind, the misery uncompounded by chilling rain.
Sacrificing himself for a struggling fellow rider Angus paced one of his accompanying riders back over the last 25 miles despite the impact on his overall time. Minimising the delay he was still home in a time of five and half hours, enthusing that he can’t wait for next years version such was the standard of promotion.
Closer to home Ian Beard plus Ian and Anne Robinson undertook the Enduro 6 Event at Catton Park, near Walton-on-Trent. Electing to ride individually Beard set himself a target of 8 laps of the 6 miles long circuit, a tall order for an off road ride. The bright but chilly conditions were fine for the challenge with the under wheel environment fairly free of mud. This scenario lent itself well to the ambitious.
By his 8th lap Ian was totally absorbed in the occasion and found the legs to go beyond his envisaged target eventually completing 9 laps, 54 miles, in six and a half hours, no mean feat. And he became another to be looking forward to what tnext year’s event has to offer.
In the mixed pairs competition Ian and Anne relayed on another allowing themselves a comfortable 4 laps apiece, and again a great day out mountain biking
